Environmental Sustainability
We are committed to delivering on Pepsico’s Performance With Purpose commitments to protect the Earth’s natural resources in all aspects of our operations in Ireland.
We are committed to continually improve the world in which we operate, through innovation and more efficient use of land, energy, water and packaging in our operations.
Our Goals and Commitments
PepsiCo’s Sustainability goals are embedded into every decision we make.
These Goals are:
- Improve Water consumption efficiency by 20% per unit production by 2015, over our 2006 base year.
- Improve our electricity use efficiency by 20% per unit of production by 2015.
- Reduce our fuel use intensity by 25 % per unit of production by 2015.
- Work to eliminate all solid waste to landfills from our production facilities.
- Commit to an absolute reduction in GHG emissions.
Our Progress to date:
Our Commitment
Through the formation of cross functional Sustainability leadership teams;
- Energy Team
- Water team
- Waste Team
- Communication Team
We identify and drive opportunities using structured techniques and engagement by all our staff in our Irish manufacturing operations. At the end of 2009, we are ahead of annual planned targets by 9.45% on water usage and by 7.7% each on electricity and fuel usage.
Water & Energy Projects Completed in 2009
- Energy and water mapping of the sites including metering installations.
- Innovation in space heating.
- Investment in technology such, as Water Reverse Osmosis plant retentate recovery.
- CIP optimisation at Carrigaline oil and blenders processes, and Little Island cleaning agents substitution project.
- Daily and weekly energy reports have been developed to track usages and opportunities.
Our Commitment
Our Environmental programmes also incorporate Solid waste reduction goals aligned with the Waste Management hierarchy. We aim to eliminate all solid waste to landfill, and maximise recovery through composting, reuse and recycling rates.
Waste Hierarchy
At the end of 2009 Our total landfill volumes have reduced significantly over 2008 by many successful indicatives such as:
- Waste Management Awareness communications Drives which established enhanced compostable and recycling facilities at each of our 3 locations.
- Sourcing a Recycling outlet for filters at Little Island dramatically reduced the volumes to landfill in 2009.
- Supplier engagement and Pepsi packaging technology innovation reduced by 50% the amount of protective plastic covering required for blue drums in the Carrigaline site.
Climate Change
From scaling up our use of renewable fuel sources to scaling back our energy consumption, we are continually working to address the issue of climate change. We are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of our operations.
Our Little Island site’s finished goods warehouse purchases only "Green electricity" from renewable sources such as wind and wave power, eliminating 150 tonnes per annum of CO2 being released to the atmosphere. Pepsi are committed to reducing the impact of energy consumption on the environment through minimising carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
ISO 14,001 Certification of our Environmental Management System.
Since early 2010 both our manufacturing sites have been independently certified to the International Environmental Management systems standard: ISO 14,001. ISO 14,001 is globally, the most widely recognised environmental management system standard. Being accredited to this Environmental Management system international standard, is important for Pepsi Ireland in establishing and maintaining best environmental practice and promoting our strong compliance culture in all our activities.
Sustainability in our Supply Chain.
PepsiCo procurement department are actively engaging with our numerous suppliers across the business, to ensure that only companies aligned with our sustainability goals and targets will become preferred suppliers.
Current and Future plans:
At PepsiCo Ireland our Sustainability efforts continue into 2010 and beyond.
